-

A MAN shot his girlfriend with his father’s hunting rifle while she was sitting in a car following an argument, a court heard on Tuesday. The incident happened at around 5.30pm on Monday on Ceyhan Sokak in the Küçük Kaymaklı district of the capital. Çağrı Karadayı pulled the trigger twice from a distance of 2.7 metres at lover Semiye Şeytan as she sat at the wheel of the vehicle, Lefkoşa District Court was told. Ms Şeytan sustained injuries to her hip and groin and was operated on at Lefkoşa State Hospital. Her condition is not said to be lifethreatening.

Some reports claimed the injured Ms Şeytan had driven for more than a kilometre to Hamitköy before calling for help from a relative, who then alerted emergency services.

Mr Karadayı turned himself in to police later in the evening, along with the weapon.

He was arrested on charges of attempted murder, wounding, illegal possession of a firearm and an “explosive substance” and firing a weapon in a residential area.

Judge Hazal Hacımulla ordered Mr Karadayı be remanded in custody for three days due to the “seriousness of the crimes” and for police to carry out further investigations.
