Karaman ‘stalwart’ remembered at walk

- By YASEM‹N GÜLPINAR

A KARAMAN “stalwart” who enjoyed telling stories of his “derring-do” was remembered at the village’s annual Boxing Day walk.

Around 10 locals paid tribute to long-term resident Victor Strevens, 70, who died in the UK on December 19, by dedicating the walk to him.

Mr Strevens moved to the TRNC in the 1980s and was known for his passion for mountain walking, often taking others with him to explore unknown tracks.

He was an energetic man with a “maverick” personality who “enjoyed life to the fullest”, friends said.

Mr Strevens was said to have had an “encyclopaedic” knowledge of beer brewing, which he enjoyed sharing with neighbours.

He entertained locals with stories of his exploits during his time working on North Sea trawlers and in the newspaper industry in Fleet Street and Wapping, in London.

He is survived by his wife Margaret, daughter Joanne and son Daniel. His funeral takes place on Thursday at 12.30pm UK time and donations to Cancer Research are invited.

Karaman residents Peter and Sylvia Austin will be attending and have offered to take donations from TRNC friends if they reach them by Tuesday — for more details, write to sylviaustin@gmail.com.
