THE second of the phenomenally successful movies based on JK Rowling’s books about apprentice wizards and witches. This episode is acknowledged as one of the best.
In this 2002 schoolboy fantasy, the wide-eyed Harry and pals Hermione and Ron were saved from a talking giant spider by a car that flies. They also fight a huge serpent. Another threat to Hogwarts’ School for wizards and witches was Kenneth Branagh as a foppish but sinister professor.
The eight Harry Potter movies cost $1 billion and recouped $7 billion at the box office. Author JK Rowling insists there will be no more adventures for Harry. Take that with a pinch of salt.
Conan Doyle once killed off Sherlock Holmes but resuscitated him years later when the money stopped rolling in.
Hogwarts’ young stars Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint are busy making grown-up movies and fashioning new acting careers.
Can they make it as grown-up thespians? Only time will tell.
Critic Roger Ebert said: “Rowling has created a mythological world as grand as StarWars but filled with more wit and humanity.”
