A WEIRD comedy about a wealthy New York socialite in the ‘40s who believed she had a wonderful soprano voice and gave public performances. She was applauded to the echo because the audience was packed with friends and the rest were bribed by her husband.

Meryl Streep convinces as Florence Foster Jenkins and Hugh Grant gives his best performance in years as her doting hubbie St Clair Bayfield. When Florence is tucked up in bed, he sneaks off to his mistress, played by Rebecca Ferguson.

Simon Helberg is hilarious as pianist Cosme McMoon who is hired to accompany the diva. As she warbles offkey, his expressions change from disbelief to repressed hysteria.

Eventually the soprano insists on performing at Carnegie Hall and even St Clair’s attempts at bribery and intimidation, cannot prevent one New York critic from printing the truth. St Clair tries to buy up all the newspapers, but the game is up.
