KEEN table tennis players are being sought to form a table tennis league this year.

Some 14 people have already joined a new table tennis club based at Leo’s Bar in Ozanköy, where they have been training for around a month under the watchful eye of coach Hugh O’Neill in preparation for the league.

It is now hoped to form more clubs, initially in Esentepe and Karşıyaka, to compete in TRNC-wide competition. The planned league will be open to all ages and levels of experience.

Mr O’Neill said he was hoping to repeat the success he had while living in Turkey, where he formed a similar club and was its coach for nine years.

“I began with six members and ended up with around 500, which I would now like to do here,” he told Cyprus Today.

“Table tennis is a fun, social and physical activity that can be quite addictive. We hope to establish more clubs in local bars and restaurants while building up a league before the summer season, after which we will consider a more serious, competitive league as players gain more experience.

“I am expecting the league to take off quite quickly because when someone comes for a trial they usually return the following week.

“We have had a good level of interest so far and would welcome more people to come along and find out more.”

The Leo’s Bar Table Tennis Club meets for practice at 7pm on Wednesdays. For more information email Mr O’Neill at inchequin@hotmail.com.
