A WITTY satire that shows how corporate America sugars the pill when it comes to sacking the workforce.
George Clooney is perfect as Ryan Bingham, a smoothie with a luxury lifestyle and no conscience who euphemistically describes himself as a “termination facilitator”.
He fires people for a living and enjoys it. When the bosses decide to sack a sizeable chunk of the workforce and can’t quite look the human consequences in the eye, they send in fast talking Bingham. After the 2008 banking meltdown, downsizers like him became a growth industry.
On the road, he casually shacks up with dishy Vera Farmiga, another professional traveller. Bingham is also shadowed by bright assistant Anna Kendrick who is working on the next stage of their company’s masterplan — sack people electronically by Skype and save lots of air fares. Bingham too is expendable.
Jason Reitman co-wrote and directed in 2009, from a novel by Walter Kirn. This savvy movie features reactions from real life workers who have just been told that their labour is surplus to requirements.
Empire movie magazine called it: “Smart, silky, sensitive, and funny old-school movie magic. Hollywood can still make great movies.”
