A ROUSING adventure yarn beset with breathless action and close shaves galore. The impossible odds of a Die Hard mission faced with the imperturbability of an Indiana Jones movie.
Nerdy FBI weapons expert Stanley Goodspeed, alias Nicolas Cage, is teamed with former SAS warrior John Patrick Mason, played by the redoubtable Sean Connery, serving a 30-year stretch for spying on the Yanks. Connery must break into the former island prison of Alcatraz and enable Cage to disarm rockets armed with nerve gas that disaffected soldiers have aimed at nearby San Francisco. Connery was the only prisoner to escape from The Rock and the authorities hopes he knows how to get back in.
Renegade US General Francis X Hummel, played by Ed Harris, and his disgruntled grunts have taken over Alcatraz and are holding their government to ransom.
Bravura performances all round, lots of work for the stuntmen and the usual macho posturing from all sides. Michael Bay directed in 1996 from a story by David Weisberg and Douglas S Cook.
Empire magazine called it: “Entertaining action, nothing more nor less. Loud and bombastic, crammed with heroic leads and it doesn’t make a great deal of sense. Breathlessly exciting.”
