THIS stylish weepie won five Oscars in 1983. A quirky family drama chronicling the ups and downs of a loving relationship between feisty widow Shirley MacLaine and her grown-up daughter Debra Winger. Critically acclaimed and worth watching again. This superbly acted and heart-warming tale is brimful of minor infidelities and heartaches that feel true to life. All this plus a terrific support performance from Jack Nicholson.
Debra has married likable English teacher Jeff Daniels and they have three children, but Jeff has a wandering eye.
Shirley lives resolutely alone but eventually succumbs to the roguish charm of devil-may-care ex-astronaut Nicholson who lives it up in the house next door.
Former TV director James L Brooks scored a triple triumph with Academy Awards for Best Picture, Director and Screenplay. MacLaine was Best Actress and Nicholson was Best Supporting Actor. Critic Roger Ebert said: “This is a wonderful film. “There isn’t a thing that I would change, and I was exhilarated by the freedom it gives itself to move from the high comedy of Nicholson’s best moments to the acting of Debra Winger in the closing scenes.”
