AN ENJOYABLE comedy thriller that takes the mickey out of beauty contests and was a box office hit. A predictable but pleasant way to pass a couple of hours.
Sandra Bullock is FBI agent Gracie Hart who unsurprisingly fits into a bikini better than most of her colleagues.
Gracie goes undercover as a contestant in the Miss America beauty pageant, to trap a mad bomber who threatens to blow up the leggy lovelies.
Gracie is a tomboy who discovers the feminine side of her nature. Her mentor is a disgraced pageant consultant, a likeable gay stylishly played by Michael Caine.
Romantic interest is fellow agent Benjamin Bratt who sees his partner in a different light when she struts her stuff in a bikini.
Well known faces appearing as organisers of the pageant are Candice Bergen and William Shatner, whom you’ll remember as Captain Kirk on Starship Enterprise.
Screenwriter Marc Lawrence clearly enjoyed sending up the absurd world of beauty contests and Donald Petrie directed in 2000.
Empire magazine called it: “A genuine crowd-pleaser boasting a charming star turn. This film is good, easy-onthe-brain fun.”
