AN ENJOYABLE slam-bang action thriller based on a famous American comic book hero. Rumbustious hokum at maximum speed.

Joe Dredd, a super-cop of the 22nd century is judge, jury and executioner in the riot-torn streets of Mega City. Dredd, alias Sylvester Stallone, is framed for murder by his evil clone Armand Assante and banished to the outer wilderness. Naturally, Dredd fights to clear his name and is aided by wise old Max von Sydow and sexy lady judge Diane Lane.

Critics and fans were divided in 1995. The Times Literary Supplement called it “continuously beautiful and interesting from beginning to end”.

The movie also won some worst film awards and comic book fans were outraged because their hero broke two cardinal rules — he took off his helmet and got romantically involved.

This all-action flick took over a $100 million at the box office.

Unfortunately it cost so much to make it was a commercial flop. Never mind, it’s good fun anyway. Directed by Danny Cannon. Radio Times called it: “An underrated fantasy, full of flash, plenty of bang and packing a considerable wallop.”
