‘War zone’

Eight people injured after driver ‘jumps red light’

EIGHT people were injured in a horror smash on the Girne-Alsancak main road on Thursday.

The collision, which happened at around 5.50pm at the Zeytinlik traffic lights, left the road looking like a “war zone”, according to a news report by CyprusToda­y’s sister newspaper Kıbrıs.

Rescue crews, helped by other motorists, had to pull the seven occupants of a van through the windscreen and the upturned passenger door after it ended up on its side after being hit by a car that allegedly jumped a red light. Items in the back of the van were strewn across the asphalt.

Van driver Tekin Çiftci, 38, and passengers Türkmen Bingöl, 33, İbrahim Aladağ, 18, Battal Aladağ, 20, Rıdvan Akdeniz, 30, Bahri Akdeniz, 50, and Furkan Akdeniz, 18, were all taken to Girne’s Akçiçek State Hospital. The driver of the other vehicle involved, Abdulcelil Korkmaz, 68, was taken to Lefkoşa State Hospital. Police have launched an investigat­ion.

Elsewhere three people, including a nine-year-old boy and his mother, were injured when they were involved in a collision with another car at a junction on the Güzelyurt-Bostancı road on Thursday. Traffic lights at the intersecti­on were out of order when the accident occured, reports said.

A motorcylis­t was seriously injured when he collided with a car in the Güzelyurt village of Aydınköy on Saturday.

Osman Özgür, 30, was taken to Lefkoşa State Hospital following the accident, which involved a car driven by Murat Erdem, 43.

A driver was left in a critical condition after he crashed into a tree at the Mehmetçik junction of the İskele-Karpaz road at around 5pm on Monday.

Ali Dikbaş, 38, was rushed by ambulance to Gazimağusa State Hospital before being transferre­d to Lefkoşa State Hospital.

Shoppers in Girne had a lucky escape when a car crashed through the front of Bimar supermarke­t at around 5pm on Friday last week.

Luckily no-one was injured, but there was extensive damage to the shop, police said. Medine Telkaş, 42, was reportedly charged with careless driving after “losing control” of her vehicle and mounting the pavement.

Meanwhile an ambulance carrying a patient collided with a lorry on Dr Fazıl Küçük Bulvarı in Lefkoşa on Saturday, but there were no reports of injuries.

The Kolan British Hospital ambulance was being driven by Orçun Sancak when it struck a lorry with Mehmet Çokluk, 46, at the wheel.
