‘Our plight is being ignored’

Ozanköy expat speaks of ‘frustration’ over water-filled potholes in front driveway

- By KEREM HASAN

AN OZANKÖY expat resident has spoken of the “frustration” caused by waterfilled pot holes at the entrance to her driveway.

Mary Broomfield, 69, from Lancashire, moved to North Cyprus with her husband, Jimmy, in 2000.

But the couple have had to contend with large pools of water when entering or leaving their home which they believe is caused by either water leaking from a nearby house’s water pipe or

from an underground water distribution pipeline.

The Broomfield couple live on Zülaca Sokak in Özanköy.

Mrs Broomfield told CyprusToday: “It has been ongoing for more than two years with the water flooding the front of our driveway through no fault of our own.

“Despite our numerous attempts in asking the Girne Municipality for help, no action has been taken.

“Over time the constant pool of water has caused the road to erode and the

resulting pot holes are damaging our car tyres. It has also become a magnet for mosquitoes.

“We don’t know what else to do because all of our complaints seem to have landed on deaf ears at the municipality.”

Mr Broomfield added: “When the problem first started I investigated the leak myself and I believe that a nearby house that is being renovated has a leak from a connecting water pipe to the property. However, with the complaint of water

shortages in North Cyprus, we have to contemplate living through this agony every time there is running water in the system. This matter has been ongoing for two years and is causing us a lot of stress. When the rains start the entrance to our driveway will be further flooded.”

CyprusToday contacted Girne Municipality. A spokesman said they were “looking into the matter to determine the cause of the leakage and ascertain what sort of action can be taken”.
