A “BOWL-A-THON” in aid of the Help Those with Cancer Association (Tulips) generated over 20,000TL for the charity, it was revealed on Wednesday.

Kurt Duffield and Maureen Jennings collected the cash from a sponsored 12-hourlong event on October 2 at the Olive Press Bowling Club, Lapta raising a total of 20,268TL and smashing their initial target of £500 (roughly 5,000TL).

Elsewhere a further 762,85TL was raised at an afternoon tea event in aid of “Tulips Pink Month” at the Black Olive Café in Alsancak.

Also Black Olive owner Vicki Karaca has teamed up with Jonathan HallSmith for a “brand new fundraiser” for Tulips called “The Big Walk 2020” starting at 11am on December 6 and finishing at 11am the next day. “The Big Walk 2020 is a 24-hour walk around the Milli [National] Park in Alsancak, but we are not asking you all to walk for 24 hours!” Tulips spokeswoman Sue Tilt said. “The idea is you come along, walk as far as you want to (there is no minimum distance) and donate 50TL per person, with children going free. “If you wish to raise money through sponsorship then please do, we have sponsor forms ready for both individuals and teams. “If you wish to walk as a team and walk a certain distance or the full 24 hours between you all in shifts then we would be delighted to hear from you. We already have a couple of restaurants/ clubs showing an interest in walking the 24 hours.

“We are trying to stagger walkers as those that are covering the full 24 hours will have to start first. After that we will be able set everyone else off.”

Those wishing to take part for “some or all of the day” should reserve a place by calling 0533 872 0132.

“This is so we can gauge how many people will be attending regarding car parking,” Mrs Tilt said. “If you can car share that would help enormously.” Those who want further information should call 0542 854 8714.

“We are incredibly lucky to have the full support of the mayor of Alsancak and the Alsancak Belediye [ Municipality] staff who have gone out of their way to help us,” Mrs Tilt added.
