Fifth accident victim of 2021

-

A 40-YEAR-old man became the fifth road accident victim of 2021 when his car crashed into an olive tree in Lapta at 1am on Sunday.

The accident happened when Osman Atakara lost control of his car on a bend while driving “carelessly” on the Girne-Güzeyurt main road, police said.

His jeep then hit the tree in a dry riverbed. Mr Atakara was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. It later emerged that Mr Atakara was the owner of the Atkara petrol station in Alsancak.

Elsewhere one person was injured when a lorry and a delivery van were involved in a collision on the dual carriageway between Haspolat and Hamitköy at 12.10pm on Monday.

Van driver Atajan Mamedov, 26, was driving towards Lefkoşa when his vehicle clipped the back of the lorry’s trailer due to “careless driving” police said.

The van then hit steel barriers on the central reservation before coming to a stop in the middle of the road. Mr Mamedov was taken to hospital for treatment. The incident caused long tailbacks.

Meanwhile a driver escaped injury when he crashed his car in Lefkoşa at 2am last Saturday.

Police said Mehmet Güvensoylu, 25, was six times over the drink-drive limit when he lost control of a Mercedes in front of the Grand Pasha Hotel, formerly known as the Golden Tulip Hotel, on Mehmet Akif Caddesi.

The car hit a barrier in the centre of the road, spun around, before hitting an advertising sign, a fence, a parked car and flower pots.

Nobody was injured and legal proceedings have been launched against the driver, police added.
