GREEK Cypriot police arrested three people this week after a badly decomposed woman’s body was found in the buffer zone between the villages of Akıncılar and Kiracıköy (Athienou).

A story published by Cyprus Today’s sister newspaper Kıbrıs on Thursday, citing Greek Cypriot media reports, said that caustic soda – another term for sodium hydroxide – had been poured on the body to hide the smell, leading to claims that it had been “mummified”.

According to information Kıbrıs obtained from Greek Cypriot news sources, the woman has yet to be formally identified. It is believed she was murdered.

A 32-year-old male Egyptian national, believed to have been in a relationship with the woman, was arrested in connection with the case and remanded in custody. Police later arrested two other men, aged 31 and 36.

They believe that the woman was killed in an apartment in the Eylence area of South Nicosia and had been hidden in a bedroom for some time.

The body was then dumped in a well some 200 metres away due to the smell. It was then removed weeks later and buried in a shallow hole dug in a field between Akıncılar and Kiracıköy, wrapped in plastic bin bags, reports said. The corpse was discovered on Tuesday when a farmer was ploughing his field with a tractor.

Greek Cypriot police spokesman Chrtistos Andreou reportedly said that while investigators had some information regarding who the victim is, they were unable to confirm her identity.
