Waste management project launched for Environment Day

-

A “WASTE Management Project” was launched in Tatlısu to mark World Environment Day.

The event, held under the slogans “We care, we recycle” and “Let’s protect our environment for a better world”, took place in front of the Tatlısu Municipality building and was attended by President Ersin Tatar and wife Sibel Tatar.

Cages that can be used to deposit recyclable waste have been placed outside the entrance to the building, one within a model of an extinct dwarf elephant and the other as a Mediterranean monk seal.

“Plastics released into the environment are carried to the seas by rain water and threaten the life of many sea creatures,” organisers of the event said.

“Plastic, paper, metal and glass are not waste, you can collect these materials separately and recycle them. You can contribute to the protection of nature, the country’s economy and energy savings by recycling waste.”

President Tatar said that the project was launched in “one of the most beautiful places in the TRNC” and thanked and congratulated those involved, including his spouse.

He called on everyone to work with “determination and faith and to protect their environment in order to leave a clean and viable environment for future generations”.

The TRNC is working “in cooperation with Turkey to protect the beautiful coastlines” he added.

He hoped that the recycling project would be successful in Tatlısu and “spread throughout the country”.

Mrs Tatar said that those who “love nature, the environment and their country” attached importance to the realisation of the project.

The “necessary pressure to make legal regulations and spread this project to the entire TRNC” will be applied, she continued, adding that the dwarf elephant and Mediterranean monk seal are “unique to Cyprus and will contribute to tourism”.

Mrs Tatar explained that with this project they aim to collect “not only waste such as paper and glass” but also the “most dangerous kinds such as medical waste”.
