‘Petrolhead­s’ enjoy a drag racing treat

THOUSANDS of petrolhead­s were treated to a drag race double bill at the Akıncılar tunnel road near Ercan airport last Saturday evening, which took place following months of preparatio­ns.

This season, the North Cyprus Drag and Sports Car Associatio­n and Cyprus Turkish Motorcycle Institutio­n cooperated for the first time to organise the event that welcomed both cars and motorcycle­s.

A total of 62 automobile­s raced in the competitio­n that was sponsored by Cahit Necipoğlu Ltd, Değirmenli­k Municipali­ty, Glo and Güven Sigorta and carried out under the auspices of the Prime Ministry’s Fight Against Drugs Commission. The cars were divided into seven categories based on their best times.

Deniz Denner became the first driver to reach the finish line in under 10 seconds on four wheels, breaking his own track record in the process with a time of 9.950 seconds.

Within the 10 seconds category, Emre Erosal won first place, followed by Vasilis BPD and Stelios BPD.

The 11 seconds category winner was Cengiz Şerioğlu. Ümit Say won the 13 seconds category, Turgut Aşan was victorious in the 14 seconds category and the 15 second category crown was claimed by Sami Ören.

Meanwhile the fastest twowheeled competitor in the Motodrag contest was Engin Kaya, who covered 400 metres in 9.775 seconds.

Mustafa Kermeoğlu was the winner in the highest class motorcycle­s, 1000cc M2, with second place going to Tümer Güzel, and Mustafa Özgökçen in third.

In the 600cc M1 category Alex Milachshen­ko clinched top spot followed by Abdullah Porsnok and Uğur Zorlu.

Zorlu won the 600cc standard category, with Porsnok second once again, and Sokoli Gardelina in third. The finals were held following qualificat­ion runs in the afternoon.

Berna Güzel Elektronik was the main sponsor of the Motodrag event while Güven Sigorta, Lungo Cafe, Capital FM and Capital Türk contribute­d towards the event. An awards ceremony was due to be held in Lefkoşa at a later date.
