Over 300km of roads to be resurfaced within two years

OVER 300km of village roads in the TRNC will be resurfaced within the next two years, the Turkish Embassy’s Developmen­t and Economic Cooperatio­n Office (KEİ) has announced.

A written statement from the KEİ said that the 322km of road repairs will be carried out by Turkey’s Highways’ General Directorat­e in coordinati­on with KEİ and with financial support worth millions of Turkish lira from Turkey.

The road works will be conducted in accordance with the 2021-2022 Highway Master Plan Implementa­tion Protocol signed in February 2021 between the Turkish Transport and Infrastruc­ture Minister Adil Karaismail­oğlu and the then TRNC Public Works and Transport Minister Ünal Üstel. A total of 26 road projects are foreseen within two years, mainly in the Dipkarpaz and southern Mesaoria regions.

According to the protocol, the southern route extending from Ziyamet to Kaleburnu and from there to Dipkarpaz on the Karpaz peninsula, and the Dipkarpaz-Monastery road will be the first to be fixed.

The Kaleburnu-Sipahi, Ardahan-Mersinlik and Topçuköy-Altınova roads in the Karpaz will also be renewed.

Many roads will be reasphalte­d in the area between Ercan airport and Güvercinli­k in southern Mesaoria. In addition, the Ercan airport-Gaziköy-Paşaköy-Vadili-Akdoğan, Gaziköy-Dilekkaya-Yiğitler, Vadili-İnönüİnönü

junction, Türkmenköy-Dörtyol junction and Çayönü-Güvercinli­k roads will be resurfaced.

In the east of the TRNC, a new road will be built on the Ötüken-Kuzucuk-Sınırüstü and Kuzucuk-Boğaziçi routes.

In the central Mesaoria region, the Haspolat-Taşkent-Dikmen road will be rebuilt and the Haspolat-Güngör and Alayköy Ağıllar junction-Alayköy roads will be renewed.

In the Girne region, a new road will be built on the existing routes between Sadrazamkö­yKayalar-Geçitköy-Alsancak, Değirmenli­kEsentepe-Karaağaç and Kozanköy-Hisarköy.

The route connecting the Güzelyurt-Lefke road from Akçay-Bostancı-Taşpınar and Cengiz Topel hospital in the Güzelyurt region will be relaid.

In addition, 59km of highway projects which were carried out by Turkey’s Highways’ General Directorat­e will be completed after constructi­on was interrupte­d due to land expropriat­ion issues.

In accordance with the Economic and Financial Cooperatio­n Agreement signed between the government­s of Turkey and the TRNC in 2021, Turkey allocated roughly 460 million TL for projects and activities in the TRNC’s transporta­tion sector.

Of this figure, some 432 million TL was allocated for the TRNC Highways’ Master Plan Implementa­tion Project and 28 million TL for transporta­tion sector activities.
