Lions send used frames to Africa
LIONS Clubs within the Lefkoşa region have collected 210 pairs of used spectacle frames for people in need in Africa as part of their “Lions Recycle for Sight” programme.
The frames were packaged up following the completion of a collection campaign launched at the start of the year by the Lefkoşa Capital, Lefkoşa Sarayönü and
Central Lefkoşa Lions clubs.
They have been delivered to a special International Lions Clubs eyeglass recycling centre in France for sorting.
The frames were collected from recycling baskets prepared for the campaign and placed in shopping centres and supermarkets, as well as from donations made by eyeglass stores Akay Optik and Retina Optik.
Once classified and numbered they will then be sent to individuals in need in Africa.
The presidents of Lefkoşa Capital, Lefkoşa Sarayönü and Central Lefkoşa Lions clubs – Rezan Şekerzade, Sare Tüfekçi and Pervin Gürler respectively — together with the clubs’ executive committee members, presented Benli Market, Kiler Market and Önder Shopping Centre with certificates of appreciation for placing collection baskets for second-hand glasses in their stores, as well as to Akay Optik and Retina Optik.
According to Lions International, a global network of volunteers with its headquarters in Chicago, USA, “millions living in low and middle income countries lack access to basic eye care services”.
“Lions have recognised the urgent need for corrective lenses and collect usable glasses in their communities to support the Lions Recycle For Sight Program.”
