MORE than a kilo of drugs, guns and ammunition was discovered during a bust by police in Girne called “Operation Vortex”.

The Police Headquarters’ Narcotics and Smuggling Prevention Department teams carried out the recent operation, seizing about half a kilo of cannabis, around a kilo of “methamphetamine-type narcotic substances”, six pistols, “one of which fires blanks”, five magazines and eight live rounds that were “all in the possession of one person”.

As part of the operation that lasted from “night until the morning”, police arrested two people and announced that another person was being sought.

Suspect “ABA”, who was caught in possession of the illicit goods, and “SŞ” who police believe is connected to the matter, were arrested and brought before court.

Police sergeant Ahmet Bayram told Girne District Court that on September 16, at around 9.30pm Narcotics and Smuggling Prevention Department teams noticed ABA acting “suspiciously” on Gazi Osman Paşa Sokak.

When they searched him they found a substance believed to be a “cannabis-type drug” weighing about 300 grammes and took it into evidence.

Sergeant Bayram explained that a further investigation was carried out at the suspect’s residence, uncovering approximately 250 grammes of a substance believed to be a “cannabistype drug ready for sale”, a substance “thought to be a methamphetaminetype drug weighing approximately 720 grammes, a precision scale presumed to have drug residue on it, five 9mm pistols, a 9mm blank-firing pistol, five magazines belonging to the pistols and eight live 9mm rounds”.

The suspects were remanded in custody to allow police more time to investigate and due to the “seriousness of the matter”.
