Cash prizes up for grabs in Evkaf youth competitions

- By TOM CLEAVER

EVKAF is holding two competitions aimed at encouraging the youth of North Cyprus to protect the environment. The competitions are open to young people only, and it is hoped that they will raise awareness of environmental problems and encourage the next generation to live sustainably.

One of the competitions is a Jingle Contest. People aged five to 20 have been tasked with writing lyrics to the tune of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, “so that our island can unite around your song and save nature and mankind for future generations”. Entrants are asked to email a recording of their jingle to Evkaf, and they will be judged according to a set of criteria including originality, liveliness, appeal, and whether the person has a “pleasing and recordable voice”.

The top 20 contestants will be invited to perform a live audition at Villa Diva in Çatalköy. Entrants are asked to email jingle@evkaf.org with a nickname – not their real names – as well as their age, telephone number, and a recording of their jingle that must not exceed one minute in length, before October 25. The winner will win a prize of 3,000TL.

The other competition is a T-shirt Design Contest, with children asked to design a T-shirt that will be printed and sold in North Cyprus.

The money raised from T-shirt sales will be used in order to buy saplings to be planted. There will be three winning T-shirts from three different age categories – ages six10, 11-14, and 15-18.

The T-shirts will be judged by a jury of professional artists in North Cyprus according to their relevance to environmentalism, originality, creativity, and colour harmony.

Entrants are asked to deliver their designs in person on white paper to Evkaf’s headquarters on Girne Caddesi in Lefkoşa’s old city, once again with a nickname rather than real names, as well as their age and telephone number before October 25. The winner of each age category will win a prize of 2,500TL.
