Children get creative at Lefkoşa art workshop
FORTY children aged from seven to 12 took part in a “Children’s Workshop” last weekend organised by Lefkoşa Turkish Municipality (LTB) in cooperation with the Lefkoşa Scouting Association.
According to information provided by LTB, the children made mandalas, jewellery and kites, painted scented
stones, played street games and created homes for birds and cats from recycled materials.
The aim of the event was to raise children’s “environmental awareness and increase their love for animals” and improve their dexterity.
After the event, the crafts produced were exhibited and the cat houses were given to the Lefkoşa Animal Shelter to be placed in suitable spots.
Lefkoşa Mayor Mehmet Harmancı, the Lefkoşa Scouting Association, and LTB officials also attended and gave the children “Street Animal Friend” certificates and a picture storybook prepared by the municipality.
Lefkoşa Scouting Association manager and Children’s Workshop director Bakiye Kurtoğlu presented Mr Harmancı with a gift titled “LTB New World”, which she had prepared with the children.
Mr Harmancı, who gave a short speech at the event, said: “It is rewarding for children to increase their self-confidence, develop their ability to work together, socialise, make bird nests and cat homes from recycled materials and gain environmental awareness.”
He added that LTB plans to organise further activities including different workshops at the Children’s Centre in Lefkoşa’s walled city, that he said will be opened by the municipality “very soon”.
