Company wins contract to supply 150,000 tonnes of oil
A COMPANY has won a contract to supply 150,000 tonnes of fuel oil to the Cyprus Turkish Electricity Authority (KıbTek) for use at the Teknecik power station.
Sideral Ltd was named as the winner of the tender opened by the Central Tender Commission (MİK).
According to the details of the contract, the fossil fuel will be shipped over at “periodic intervals” within a year.
MİK chairman Halis Üresin said that the deal was approved after a five-day objection period passed without any objections raised.
“Now Kıb-Tek will make a contract and the fuel will come to our island in a sound way and in accordance with the requests,” he said.
“Three companies participated in the tender, one of which was deemed invalid. Among the remaining companies, Sideral Ltd was the most affordable.”
Kıb-Tek board chairman Turan Büyükyılmaz said that once he has received official written notification of the tender
“Once the contract is signed, the company has an obligation to deliver 150,000 tonnes of fuel to [Kıb-Tek] within a year according to the periodic plan we have prepared,” he stated.
“If they don’t, a penal sanction will be applied. But I think they will. I don’t think there will be any problems.”
Mr Büyükyılmaz said that both “Kıb-Tek and the Turkish Cypriot people” were “relieved” at the tender’s completion, which had dragged on for 10 months.
Mentioning that Kıb-Tek only had enough stocks to last 26 days, Mr Büyükyılmaz said that had the tender not been finalised, then Kıb-Tek would have been forced to make another emergency fuel oil purchase, as it did in August when fuel oil was transported over land in tankers that were brought to the TRNC from Turkey on a roll-on rolloff ferry.
“It was a relief for all of us that there was no objection [to the tender],” Mr Büyükyılmaz added. “Let’s hope for the best. I believe that Kıb-Tek will be able to purchase fuel for one year without any issues.”
