(2021) (Sky Cinema Premiere, 1.10pm & 8pm) Premiere John Malkovich is as busy as ever. He currently has four movies in postproduction and is filming another. One of those awaiting release is The Survivalist, with reteams him with director Jon Keeyes, with whom he’d previously worked on Rogue Hostage, a taut action thriller. But it’s Tyrese Gibson who takes the starring role of former Marine Kyle Snowdon who is raising his daughter Angel alone after his wife abandoned the family home. Having left the service under a cloud, vowing never to fire a gun again, Kyle is forced to take up arms once more when he, his offspring and several innocent bystanders become caught up in a robbery at the store owned by his father-in-law, stern politician Sam Nelson (Malkovich). Can Kyle save everyone, including his own family, and will the situation bring them closer together — or will it merely serve to rip them further apart?

Rogue Hostage Planet of the Apes

(1968) (C5, 3.30pm) An American astronaut crash lands on a mysterious planet ruled by intelligent apes. The simian overlords are horrified to discover that, unlike their human slaves, the new arrival can speak, and plan to have him killed. In fact, it appears his only hope of survival lies with two kindly chimpanzee scientists. This is a scifi classic — and head and shoulders above the 2001 Tim Burton remake. The movie is justly famed for its clever twist, but even if you know it’s coming, there’s still plenty to enjoy including a clever, quotable script, atmospheric score, great performances and the still impressive monkey make-up. Roddy McDowall loved his chimp mask so much, he would often drive home from the studio still wearing it. Kim Hunter, Maurice Evans and James Whitmore co-star.
