ON WESTMINSTER Stumbling Sunak

-

THE higher you climb, the further you have to fall. Ask Rishi Sunak, Chancellor of the UK Exchequer and recently “can’t put a foot wrong” Tory superstar and potential first Asiandescent Prime Minister. The only way was up! No doubt about it! Oh dear, afraid not. How wrong can you be? Like a high speed train ploughing into the end of the line, Rishi’s career has just hit the proverbial buffers.

Now, I know not whether his wife improperly benefited from her “nondom” (domiciled abroad) status when she shouldn’t have, nor do I know whether Rishi broke US laws by having “green card” status whilst working as Chancellor in the UK. That is not the point. I don’t question his honesty, as yet, I have no grounds to. No, it’s his political judgement I question.

Even if his wife broke no rules, was it wise, after just introducing a tax hike not matched since Clement Atlee’s day, for her to be UK tax-exempt, whilst at the same time clobbering the average taxpayer during the biggest cost of living rise in memory? I don’t think so. Her status was bound to be made public. The situation may or may not be illegal, but surely it was guaranteed to be political dynamite in any case? A night-flying, blind bat should have seen that coming.

I think my reader is aware that I am no particular fan of Boris, but who the hell is there, waiting in the Tory wings, who is any better?

Partygate aside, he at least is playing a blinder over Ukraine. You can’t deny him that. As for the other lot, well, say no more. Starmer is about as confidence-inspiring as an umbrella with a hole in it during a wet week. Sad, isn’t it?
