Captain Marvel (2019) ✰✰✰✰(Channel 4, 9.25pm)

Premiere Vers (Brie Larson) is a member of an elite military unit called Starforce, valiant protectors of the Kree empire. During one heated battle, Vers escapes the clutches of the Skrull and crashlands on 1995 Earth where Nick Fury (Samuel L Jackson), a lowranking member of S.H.I.E.L.D, discovers a link between Vers and deceased US air force pilot Carol Danvers. As the fate of mankind hangs in the balance, Fury accompanies Vers on a quest for painful answers, which leads to Danvers’ flying partner Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch). Captain Marvel is a solid origin story for one of Marvel Comics’ most powerful heroes, who plays a pivotal role in the cataclysmic events of Avengers: Endgame. The most impressive digital trickery is reserved for turning back the clock on Jackson’s younger, fresh-faced Fury.

Dune (2021) ✰✰✰✰✰

(Sky Cinema Premiere, 11.40am & 8.00pm)

Duke Leto Atreides (Oscar Isaac) assumes control of harvesting Spice, the most valuable mineral in the universe, on the desert planet Arrakis. Duke Leto, his concubine Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson) and son Paul (Timothee Chalamet) relocate to Arrakis, home to superstitious desert-dwelling people called The Fremen, whose eyes glow blue from prolonged exposure to highly addictive Spice. The young Atreides experiences disorienting visions of a young Fremen woman, Chani (Zendaya), as he undergoes rigorous weapons training, but it’s not enough to stop a deadly assault on Arrakis. Adapted by director Denis Villeneuve, Jon Spaihts and Eric Roth from Frank Herbert’s supposedly “unfilmable” novel, Dune — or more accurately Dune Part One — is a visually breath-taking, well-acted tale of intrigue and bloodshed.
