Seaside fun helps disabled fishing
THE Lapta-Alsancak-Karşıyaka Fishermen Association held the third Piceral Festival at Lapta Fishing Harbour last Sunday in support of the “Barrier-Free Fishing Area Project” for disabled people.
The event, supported by LaptaAlsancak-Çamlıbel (LAÇ) Municipality and local small business owners, aimed to raise funds for the creation of an accessible area in the western part of Lapta Fishing Harbour, ensuring that disabled people can easily access the sea for fishing.
President Ersin Tatar graced the festival with his presence, chatting with attendees and receiving updates on the project’s progress.
Speaking at the event, Tatar emphasised the importance of modernising the Lapta Fishing Shelter and other facilities to enhance fishing efficiency.
He highlighted fishing as an integral cultural activity for Turkish Cypriots, underlining its significance to the economy.
Tatar commended LAÇ Mayor Fırat Ataser for his initiatives and the vibrant festival organisation, extending gratitude to all contributors.
Ertunç Birinci, chairman of the Lapta Alsancak Karşıyaka Fishermens association, explained that this year’s festival was dedicated to establishing an accessible fishing area at Lapta Fishermans Shelter following previous editions supporting children with leukaemia and earthquake victims.
Mayor Ataser affirmed the meaningfulness of the project, acknowledging the need for enlargement and renovation of Lapta Fishing Shelter.
He emphasised the necessity of broader support beyond municipal resources and pledged support to government-led projects.
Attendees enjoyed the opportunity to savour piceral dishes throughout the event.
