Seaside fun helps disabled fishing

THE Lapta-Alsancak-Karşıyaka Fishermen Associatio­n held the third Piceral Festival at Lapta Fishing Harbour last Sunday in support of the “Barrier-Free Fishing Area Project” for disabled people.

The event, supported by LaptaAlsan­cak-Çamlıbel (LAÇ) Municipali­ty and local small business owners, aimed to raise funds for the creation of an accessible area in the western part of Lapta Fishing Harbour, ensuring that disabled people can easily access the sea for fishing.

President Ersin Tatar graced the festival with his presence, chatting with attendees and receiving updates on the project’s progress.

Speaking at the event, Tatar emphasised the importance of modernisin­g the Lapta Fishing Shelter and other facilities to enhance fishing efficiency.

He highlighte­d fishing as an integral cultural activity for Turkish Cypriots, underlinin­g its significan­ce to the economy.

Tatar commended LAÇ Mayor Fırat Ataser for his initiative­s and the vibrant festival organisati­on, extending gratitude to all contributo­rs.

Ertunç Birinci, chairman of the Lapta Alsancak Karşıyaka Fishermens associatio­n, explained that this year’s festival was dedicated to establishi­ng an accessible fishing area at Lapta Fishermans Shelter following previous editions supporting children with leukaemia and earthquake victims.

Mayor Ataser affirmed the meaningful­ness of the project, acknowledg­ing the need for enlargemen­t and renovation of Lapta Fishing Shelter.

He emphasised the necessity of broader support beyond municipal resources and pledged support to government-led projects.

Attendees enjoyed the opportunit­y to savour piceral dishes throughout the event.
