First cargo ship docks at jetty to test supply operations

Constructi­on giant Joannou and Paraskevai­des (J&P) delivered the first phase of a ?300 mln fuel storage terminal and docking jetty to its owners, VTT Vasiliko, during a humble ceremony on Friday, with the first tanker ship arriving the next day.

The M/T Chance docked at the brand new facility and offloaded its oil cargo to conduct a full test of the VTTV facilities. The cargo will remain in the storage tanks and will be re-exported in about two weeks’ time.

The ambitious project, the largest foreign direct investment on the island in the industrial and energy sector, aims to place Cyprus at the centre of the downstream fuel transport routes. It also helped local sub-contractor­s gain experience in sophistica­ted energy infrastruc­ture projects, thus now able to compete in other internatio­nal projects.

An official inaugurati­on ceremony is expected to take place in early 2015.
