First cargo ship docks at jetty to test sup­ply op­er­a­tions

Con­struc­tion gi­ant Joan­nou and Paraske­vaides (J&P) de­liv­ered the first phase of a ?300 mln fuel stor­age ter­mi­nal and dock­ing jetty to its own­ers, VTT Vasi­liko, dur­ing a hum­ble cer­e­mony on Fri­day, with the first tanker ship ar­riv­ing the next day.

The M/T Chance docked at the brand new fa­cil­ity and off­loaded its oil cargo to con­duct a full test of the VTTV fa­cil­i­ties. The cargo will re­main in the stor­age tanks and will be re-ex­ported in about two weeks’ time.

The am­bi­tious project, the largest for­eign di­rect in­vest­ment on the is­land in the in­dus­trial and en­ergy sec­tor, aims to place Cyprus at the cen­tre of the down­stream fuel trans­port routes. It also helped lo­cal sub-con­trac­tors gain ex­pe­ri­ence in so­phis­ti­cated en­ergy in­fra­struc­ture projects, thus now able to com­pete in other in­ter­na­tional projects.

An of­fi­cial in­au­gu­ra­tion cer­e­mony is ex­pected to take place in early 2015.
