Přivedla vás pandemie k častějšímu sledování filmů a seriálů v anglickém jazyce? V testu si společně s Lily, Davidem a Stellou projdete např. slovní zásobu či fráze z oblíbených seriálů nebo si zkusíte přeložit anglické názvy filmů do češtiny. Za každou správně zodpovězenou otázku si započítáte 1 bod, pouze u cvičení č. 4 je každá správná věta za 2 body.

Lily and David live in Prague with their daughter Stella. David works as a sales manager, Lily has just started a job as an assistant and Stella is a student. Currently they are working and studying from home and they are spending most of their free time at home as well. As they are watching a lot of television, they have decided to improve their English watching TV. Have a look at their favourite TV shows in our test.

David decides to subscribe to a streaming service. He explains to Lily why it is a good idea. After reading the reasons why watching TV is good for improving English decide whether the sentences below are true or false:

With ‘Peaky Blinders’, David is brushing up on his conditionals. Conditionals, or ‘if clauses’, describe the result of something that will or might happen in the present or future or might have happened, but didn’t, in the past. They are made using different English verb tenses. Let’s have a look at The First and The Second Conditionals:

The First Conditional for real situations:

If + present simple, ... will + infinitive; here we think that the result is really possible:

If I let the Italians do this, Danny, they’ll cut off your manhood and let you drain.

The Second Conditional for hypothetical situations:

If + past simple, ... would + infinitive; these are unreal or imaginary situations:

If I knew, I’d buy the cure from Compton’s Chemists.

Now put each verb in brackets into the appropriate verb form.

1. We … (keep) this between ourselves if you … (swear) not to leave guns lying around.

2. If they … (come) for us, we … (cut) them a smile each.

3. If it … (be) common criminals, I … (find) them and find the guns.

4. If they … (want) them back this bad, they … (have) to pay. 5. You sure this isn’t heaven? If it … (be) heaven, what … I … (do) here?

Lily and Stella are big fans of Gilmore Girls, an American series about the relationship between a single mother, Lorelai Gilmore, and her super smart daughter Rory, who live

in Stars Hollow, a charming town populated by odd people. Read the dialogue between Lorelei, her fiancé Max, Rory and her boyfriend Dean and then choose the best answer for each sentence.

[It’s nighttime. Lorelai, Rory, Max, and Dean are walking along the sidewalk.]

MAX: Ugh, I can barely walk. LORELAI: Bad shoes?

MAX: I ate a cow.

LORELAI: You had a steak.

MAX: Plus the sides. Four people, six baked potatoes.

LORELAI: Uh, you exaggerate.

MAX: Am I exaggerating?

DEAN: Nope.

RORY: Ooh, ice cream! [RUNS OFF]

LORELAI: Ooh, I’m right behind you! [RUNS OFF]

MAX: How can they possibly eat more?

DEAN: Kind of surprised.

MAX: I know. They’re bottomless pits.

DEAN: I mean at you. You’ve known them long enough not to be so confused.

[They both sit on a bench.]

MAX: Oh, I’m not confused. I’m just... what do you mean?

DEAN: Their eating habits are just the start of what you’re gonna have to get used to. There’s tons of stuff you should be aware of. MAX: Really?

DEAN: Oh yeah. Like, don’t ever use the last of the Parmesan cheese. And never get into a heavy discussion late at night ’cause that’s when they’re at their crankiest. Oh, and uh, go with their bits.

MAX: Their bits?

DEAN: Yeah, like, if you’re eating pizza with them and Lorelai decides that the pepperoni is angry at the mushrooms because the mushrooms have an attitude and then she holds up a pepperoni and the pepperoni asks for your opinion... don’t just laugh. Answer the pepperoni.

MAX: Answer the pepperoni. DEAN: Oh, and uh, here’s a big one. If you ever think that they’re doing something crazy, they’re not. You see, after a while, their thinking becomes clear, but by the time it’s clear, they’ve already done two other totally crazy things that you can’t figure out. So there’s no catching up.

MAX: You have much knowledge. DEAN: You got that from Rory. MAX: Right.

DEAN: Oh, and hey, does Lorelai know what kind of ice cream you like?
