Tesoros para compartir / Treasures to share

Esta revista me es muy querida, pues se trata de Quito, mi ciudad, su Centro Histórico, el alma y espíritu de la capital de los ecuatorianos. Parece que fue ayer, cuando, con algunos de los actuales miembros de Ñan, y trabajando en la Corporación Metropolitana de Turismo (Quito Turismo), poníamos en marcha el Plan Q (Plan de Desarrollo y Mercadeo Turístico de Quito), bajo premisas no muy lejanas a las propuestas por nuestra revista Ñan. Si no hubiera sido porque el Municipio realizó la titánica tarea de recuperar el Centro Histórico, -que a pesar de haber sido nombrado Patrimonio de la Humanidad en 1978, estuvo abandonado por décadas-, nuestro intento de promoción habría sido inútil entonces, e imposible ahora. No sólo fue una recuperación de edificios, monumentos y esculturas sino también del orgullo y la identidad.

Gracias a ello, podemos hablar de estos tesoros, mostrarlos y animar a todos quienes viven y visitan la ciudad, a conocerlos y admirarlos. Quito, cofre de maravillas, en medio de los Andes, está repleta de joyas de inestimable valor cultural, artístico e histórico. Hablamos de la vida que bulle en los mercados y su colorido, y de las vidas que persisten, felices, tras las paredes de los conventos coloniales. De las hermosas aves que revolotean sobre los vecinos de barrios ejemplares, guardadores de secretos y tradiciones, y del manto de selva que oculta pumas y osos, en los prodigiosos Pichinchas. Quito, donde una fachada de gran esplendor guarda una de las obras arquitectónicas más asombrosas de nuestro continente; donde el poderoso complejo San Francisco mantiene viva la llama espiritual de su gente, intacta desde hace 500 años. Es ese orgullo ‘recuperado’ el que nos permite celebrar los detalles de nuestro Quito vivo, hoy. Y para entenderlo, para volver a vivirlo, humildemente escogemos diez tesoros que lo representan. Son sólo algunas de las razones por las cuales esta ciudad es tan especial. This magazine about my city, Quito, and its Historic Center – its soul and spirit – makes my heart beat just a little faster than usual. It seems only yesterday that many members of the Ñan team worked together on projects at Quito Turismo, launching the city’s Development and Tourism Marketing Plan “Plan Q”, creating material not too different from our magazine’s approach today. Had it not been for the Municipality’s Herculean task of recuperating the for-decades-abandoned Old Town – it’s still incredible to think that, despite being named a World Heritage Site in 1978, the quarter was so utterly forsaken for so long – our attempt to promote the city would have been futile then, and impossible now. This task implied not just the restoration of buildings, monuments and sculptures, but the recovery of our pride and our identity.

As a result, today we’re not only able to talk about Quito’s treasures, but we can show them to you, too, encourage everyone who lives and visits the city to admire them and appreciate them. Quito, this ‘treasure chest’ amidst the Andes, is full of cultural, artistic and architectural gems... From the dynamic livelihoods, flavors and colors of its markets to the joyful lives of nuns behind Colonial convent walls. From the beautiful birds that flit by the denizens of its barrios (zealous keepers of timeless secrets and traditions), to the forested puma-and-bear sanctuary of prodigal Mount Pichincha, this monumental treasure chest’s eternal lid. Within it, a spectacularly ornate façade hides one of the Americas’ most beguiling architectural works; the mighty San Francisco complex keeps the over-500-year-old kind and gentle flame of its flock’s spiritual life burning bright. Today, we can celebrate our city’s living heritage, its restored pride. And to understand it, to better experience it, we humbly chose ten of its treasures, just some of the reasons why historic Quito is so very special.
