¿Embrujadas? ¿Encantadas? Bewitched or enchanted?
Las Galápagos han sido el destino más difícil que hemos tenido que asumir en Ñan. Con su sinnúmero de leyendas, su notable historia, su fauna y flora tan especial, sus paisajes y atractivos naturales, tomar decisiones editoriales sobre qué se quedaba y qué se iba llegó a ser muy engorroso (¡Hemos planeado tres ediciones sobre el tema Galápagos!)
Las islas también son logísticamente muy complejas como destino. Ya que nuestros esfuerzos siempre están dirigidos a “estar allí”, con el fin de transmitir la experiencia a nuestros lectores a través de una perspectiva de primera mano, imaginen el trabajo que ello implica tan lejos de tierra firme.
Las Islas Encantadas han fascinado a la sociedad moderna desde hace décadas. No solo es el ‘Eden’ de Darwin, hogar de grandes descubrimientos para la Ciencia, el archipiélago es un buque insignia de la Conservación en el mundo, y es donde nació el ecoturismo como concepto de viaje. Por lo tanto, tal vez lo más difícil es serles fiel. Hemos trabajado mucho y espero poder presentar una imagen equilibrada, atractiva, intrigante e inspiradora, con información detallada, buena fotografía, historias fascinantes y nuevas perspectivas.
En esta edición, nos centramos en las islas occidentales, con un especial sobre Puerto Ayora. Hemos incluido un mapa ambicioso con la intención de mostrar el “museo viviente” que reside en las islas. También iniciamos nuestra sección para niños, con un póster didáctico, centrado en la fauna marina. Asimismo resolvimos dedicar suficiente espacio en la revista, para resaltar las maravillas que se esconden bajo el mar. La Reserva Marina de Galápagos es también Patrimonio Mundial de la Naturaleza, ¡como lo es todo en estas prodigiosas islas! Así que disfruten, y espero que nos lleven con ustedes cuando crucen el charco hasta las fabulosas Encantadas. The Galápagos has probably been the most challenging destination we have yet to take on at Ñan. With countless legends, a remarkable, unique history, spectacular wildlife, landscapes and natural attractions galore, final editorial decisions as to what stays and what goes was gut wrenching at times! (We have consequently planned three issues on the subject!)
The Galápagos is also extremely complex logistically. Since our efforts are always geared at ‘being there’, living the experience in order to transmit our destinations as accurately as possible, through a firsthand perspective, one might imagine how much work was involved.
The Enchanted Isles have fascinated modern society for decades. Not only was it Darwin’s ‘Eden’, home to groundbreaking discoveries for Science, the archipelago is a flagship for conservation worldwide, and is arguably where eco-tourism, as a concept, was born. Therefore, perhaps the most challenging this time around was to do the Encantadas justice. We worked hard in keeping it balanced, attractive, intriguing and inspiring, with in depth information, awesome photography, fascinating stories, and a fresh and up-to-date outlook.
This issue is centered on the fabulous western islands, the most remote and difficult to get to in the Galápagos archipelago. We’ve included our most ambitious map as of yet, intended to demonstrate the ‘living museum’ that resides on these islands. We’ve also initiated our ‘for kids’ section, with a bright, didactic illustration focusing on Galápagos marine wildlife, while resolving to highlight the wonders that lurk ‘under the sea’: the Galápagos Marine Reserve is as much a natural heritage site as anything else on these islands! So enjoy, and take us with you when you decide to visit the Encantadas.
