While visiting Puerto Ayora, look out for the solar boat, a pilot project developed by WWF and the Galápagos National Park. The boat was converted from a confiscated fishing vessel and runs entirely on solar power with eight panels on its roof. It’s silent and doesn’t contaminate, a great example of things to come.

Start planning now for what promises to be one of the country’s most popular and spectacular train rides: the route from Otavalo to Ibarra (which we’ll cover in our next issue!) has been rehabilitated by the Ecuadorian Railways. The opening date is set for January. www.trenecuador.com
