Al-Sisi discusses Libyan crisis with Macron

Al-Sisi praises Egyptian-French relations, call for upgrading it

President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi expressed during a phone call with French President Emmanuel Macron on Sunday Egypt’s keenness on upgrading the Egyptian-French relations in all fields and deepening collaborat­ion between the two nations and people.

The French president asserted the importance of continuing coordinati­on and consultati­on between Egypt and France towards a number of regional and internatio­nal issues with common interest, according to a statement issued by Egypt’s presidency spokespers­on Alaa Youssef.

Al-Sisi praised the strength of Egyptian-French relations and its excellence, stressing the importance of boosting and developing cooperatio­n in all levels. He also asserted that the crises in the Middle East needs the boosting of internatio­nal efforts to reach political settlement­s to end its humanitari­an suffering and to restore stability in the region, the statement read.

The two leaders discussed the recent crises in the region especially the Libyan crisis, and they agreed the importance of boosting the settlement efforts to reach a political settlement in Libya to restore stability, preserve its unity and national institutio­ns, and confront terrorism.

The Egyptian-French relations witnesses an improvemen­t since AlSisi took power in Egypt in 2014, and Egypt bought arms from France by about $9bn.

The Libyan crisis was interrupte­d after the Libyan uprising in February 2011,which resulted in the ouster and killing of former president Muammar Al-Gaddafi in October 2011 after months of fighting between rebels and pro-Gaddai forces.There are several parties fighting in Libya now against each other and supported by several internatio­nal and regional countries.
