Careem aims to increase captains to 200,000 at end of 2018

Careem, the transporta­tion app, aims at increasing the number of “captains” (drivers) working with it from 60,000 now to 200,000 by the end of 2018.

Rami Kato, the CEO of Careem Egypt, told Daily News Egypt that the company will add 140,000 captains over the coming 18 months to increase the spread of its services and meet the needs of all customers.

Careem had also announced it has invested in bus transport network Swvl, the brain child of former Careem market launcher Mostafa Kandil, fulfilling its mission to build an institutio­n for the region. The investment, $500,000 in seed funding, will be used to help Swvl expand into new cities and markets, as well as roll out new product features within its app, including new payment options. In addition to the investment, Careem’s Chief Experience Officer and Co-founder Magnus Olsson will be joining Swvl’s board of directors.

“Swvl and Careem share a similar mission in that we both desire to resolve the transporta­tion challenges facing the MENASA region,” said Olsson.

to the company, the minimum tariff on the Go service is set at EGP 5.5 while the price per km is set to EGP 2.21 and waiting time to EGP 46 per hour.The minimum trip will cost EGP 12, up from EGP 10. Previously, the prices were EGP 4.75 to start a trip, while the price of km was at EGP 1.81 and EGP 33 for waiting.

The Go Plus services also increased to EGP 7.5 for starting a trip, with a km price at EGP 2.61, waiting cost at EGP 48, and a minimum cost of trip of EGP 16.The new prices were hiked from EGP 6.26 to start a trip, while the price per km was at EGP 2.2.
