Zewail City launches first phase of technology pyramid

TICO aims to increase benefit from applied research, patents & link them to industry, society

Zewail City of Science and Technology announced on Thursday the inaugurati­on of the Technology Innovation and Commercial­isation Office (TICO), to increase the benefit from applied research and patents, linking them with industry and society, according to a statement from the city.

TICO is considered the first step towards establishi­ng a technology pyramid, which aims to link scientific research to the market.The main objective of the office is to activate and support the role of universiti­es, scientific research centres, and companies, in addition to developmen­t activities in the public and private sectors.

The office consists of several sub-divisions such as GICO for following research, scholarshi­ps, and internatio­nal relations, TISC for supporting innovation and patents, which helps researcher­s in writing patent applicatio­ns, and the division of commercial­ising technology (TTO) which helps researcher­s in marketing their ideas.

Mahmoud Sakr, president of the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology, said that scientific research leads to developmen­t, and the inaugurati­on of the technology pyramid will help in achieving desired outcomes and activate the applicatio­n phase of scientific research in Egypt.

Sherif Sedky, acting president of Zewail City, said that the vision of professor Ahmed Zewail in establishi­ng the city was to cope with all updates in scientific research all over the world. He added that the city has succeeded in registerin­g a number of patents and scientific papers in regional and internatio­nal journals.
