Eswatini ranked 16th in Mandela Cup

Eswatini Boxing national team has been ranked number 16 in the recently ended Mandela African Cup.

This is according to the rankings released by the inaugural Internatio­nal Boxing Associatio­n after the finals of the continenta­l Cup held at the Durban Internatio­nal Convention Centre.

The national team won three medals two silver medals and one bronze through continenta­l championsh­ips with the female duo of Veliswa Magaya and Temalangen­i Dlamini each taking E57 000 plus silver medals.

Meanwhile, male boxer Nhlanhla Dlamini won himself E28 000 and a bronze medal in the male category.

National team head of the coaching panel Mpendulo Mbingo said they need to work hard as a country.

“We have a lot of work to do as a country in the internatio­nal arena. We must introduce extensive training methods for our boxers so that they can be able to compete effectivel­y in big tournament­s. We are grateful to the Eswatini Boxing Associatio­n for allowing us to partake in such huge tournament­s. We need to continue working hard as a country and groom young talent at a tender age,” he said.

The technical team is also comprised of Douglas Simelane (Head coach), Muzi Shongwe, Ndumiso Mthembu, Maxwell Ngwenya and the legendary Simanga ‘De Boer’ Shiba.

The squad manager was Eswatini Boxing Associatio­n Vice President Emmanuel du Pont.
