Pupils shine in E80k ESA/ Select Athletics nationals

An opportunit­y to travel to Zimbabwe awaits the country’s best pupil athletes.

This is after the Eswatini Schools Sports Associatio­n (ESSA) held its national athletics finals last week Friday at Mavuso Sports Centre, Manzini.

Ensuring the smooth running of the finals was Eswatini Sugar Associatio­n (ESA) and Select Services, who pumped in E50 000 and E30 000, respective­ly.

Winning athletes stand to represent the country COSSASA Games that will Zimbabwe.

“ESSA has been assisted by Eswatini Sugar Associatio­n (ESA) and Select Services who donated E50 000 and E30 000 respective­ly last year,” ESSA and COSSASA Treasurer Lucky Dlamini told Eswatini Financial Times.

Dlamini also released the overall results for each of the country’s four regions, being Hhohho, Manzini, Lubombo, and Shiselweni.

The capital city of Eswatini may be in the Hhohho Region, but Manzini still proved golden in last week Friday’s Schools Athletics National Championsh­ips.

This was during the Eswatini Schools Sports Associatio­n (ESSA) athletics national finals held at Mavuso Sports Centre. According to the final overall results released by ESA, Manzini was dominant in the podium after securing 31 gold medals to Hhohho’s 28 in second place.

Manzini took home a total of 88 medals comprising 31 silver and 28 bronze. The main winners accumulate­d 801 points to Hhohho’s 771. The latter notched 28 silver and 22 bronze medals, totalling 78 medals, including the gold.

On the third and fourth places were Shiselweni and Lubombo with 565.5 and 513 points, respective­ly. Shiselweni managed 52 medals, including 21 gold, while Lubombo got 15 gold medals.

1. Manzini – 31 Gold, 31 Silver and 26 Bronze-88

2. Hhohho – 28 Gold, 28 Silver, 22 Bronze -78

3. Shiselweni - 21 Gold, 15 Silver, 16 Bronze -52

4. Lubombo – 15 Gold, 13 Silver, 16 Bronze - 44

Overall Points:

1. Manzini - 801.5 points

2. Hhohho - 771 points

3. Shiselweni - 565 points

4. Lubombo - 513 points
