JOHANNESBURG - A former Kaizer Chiefs star and Bafana Bafana legend has revealed that he has been offered land to build a football academy in one of the African countries.

Currently in Zanzibar, where he is invited to a Tanzanian Blue Economy Football Development Summit 2022, Doctor Khumalo said the east African country wants to push the bar and catch up to other countries.

In his latest Soccer Laduma column, Khumalo said: “The reason Tanzania called for foreign intervention is simply because they want to exchange knowledge, build relationships, influence people to come and invest in their country in terms of building infrastructure, academies.”

Protesters storm track

LONDON - Protesters stormed the Silverstone track after a massive opening lap crash at the British Grand Prix yesterday brought out a red flag to halt the race.

British police had said earlier they had credible intelligence a group of protesters were planning to disrupt the Grand Prix.

While the race had been redflagged, cars were still on the track slowly making their way to the pit lane as marshals and police wrestled with protesters, dragging them from the circuit as the crowd could be heard booing.

New wickets record

LONDON - Stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah has set a new record for the most wickets taken by an India bowler during a test series in England.

His haul of 3-68 – which included all of England’s top three – in the COVID-19-delayed fifth test at Edgbaston gave him 21 wickets in a five-match campaign that started last year. That surpassed Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s record of 19 wickets during a five-match series in 2014. And there should be a chance for Bumrah, leading India in place of Rohit Sharma, to add to his tally during England’s second innings in Birmingham.

LIVERPOOL - Mohamed Salah reportedly had a move lined up to a Premier League rival before he became Liverpool’s highest-paid player last week.

The Egyptian star finally put an end to the speculations surrounding his future after signing a new three-year deal with the Reds on Friday.

Reports claim that the 30-year-old is now the club’s highest earner after taking home £350 000 a week.

However, things might have panned out differently if the club owners did not meet Salah’s terms as the Sun reports that the player was prepared to join rivals Chelsea when talks stalled.

The report claims that Salah, via his agent Ramy Abbas, informed Fenway Sports Group (FSG) that he was open to returning to the Blues after reports surfaced in December about negotiations stalling due to the contract demands.

However, the FSG reportedly realised that selling Sadio Mane to Bayern Munich and losing Salah to a Premier League would not go down well the Liverpool faithful.

In the end, both parties agreed on a new contract which would see Salah stay at Anfield for another three years.
