M– Expectation has emerged that there will be increased cases of gender-based-violence as some men will not take kindly to the fact that their spouses no longer rely on them for sustenance.

The environmental impact assessment of the envisaged s Workwear revealed that the likelihood for such jealous men was high as employment opportunities abound for women.

“For some women, becoming employed after having depended on male partners or relatives will cause resentment from such males as they will fear losing financial, psychological and physical control over the women.”

On another note, it was said that women working late hours or night shift would be exposed to being attacked through robbery and rape while travelling to and from work.

To mitigate GBV, employees changing shift late at night will be transported to and from work.

“Where contractors are employed to provide transport, preference will be given to women drivers to mitigate anxiety among women passengers about being sexually assaulted by male drivers.”

NGO involved in counselling will also be brought in where there are cases of GBV.

The report said that GBV would manifest in many different ways such as verbal and emotional abuse, physical violence, neglect, abandonment, confiscation of income, women being forced to neglect their own extended family members in favour of those of the male partner.

There are currently no plans to construct residential units for management and employees. Management staff will be accommodated in rental units commercially available in Nhlangano.

“Local community members will be prioritised for employment thereby mitigating the demand for accommodation since it is anticipated that most will be living at home. The remainder will reside in existing rented accommodation, preferably within reasonable travelling distance from the workplace,” the report stated.
