JOHANNESBURG - The African National Congress (ANC) Spokesperson, Pule Mabe, says preparations are underway for the memorial service of the Party’s late Secretary General, Jessie Duarte on Thursday. Sixty eightyear-old Duarte passed away in the early hours of Sunday morning after a battle with cancer. She was buried on Sunday afternoon as according to Muslim rites. Mabe adds that details of the service will be announced in due course. “We’ve already begun speaking to our structures, especially here in Gauteng. The Provincial Secretary comrade, TK Nciza, has already indicated that they are securing UJ.’’

Suspect nabbed

JOHANNESBURG - A 25-year-old suspect arrested in connection with the alleged murder of a teacher, Kgomotso Maropola (25), in Limpopo was expected to appear in the Modimolle Magistrates Court yesterday. Maropola’s body was found buried in a shallow grave next to a railway line in Phagameng location in Modimolle in March this year.

According to Limpopo Police Spokesperson Brig Motlafela Mojapelo, the suspect was arrested last Friday.

“The victim, a teacher by profession at Noordelik School in Modimolle policing precinct, departed from her residence in Phagameng location intending to collect new clothes from a friend who ordered them through the internet,” he said.

Leopard euthanised

JOHANNESBURG - ANParks euthanised a leopard after it attacked a lodge employee in the Kruger National Park. The Shalati Concession employee was on his way to work on Sunday morning when the attack occurred.

Rangers Corps and the Airwing immediately launched an operation to search for the animal and euthanise it. According to Dreyer, this is the second leopard attack on a worker in the park. It is presumed the same leopard was involved in both attacks.

DURBAN - The start of the trial in the case of the former eThekwini Mayor, Zandile Gumede, and 21 other accused has now been set for the first of next month in the High Court in Durban. The pre-trial will take place on July 27. The start of the trial has been forced to stand down because one of the accused, Bagcinele Nzuza, the wife of the former eThekwini manager Sipho Nzuza arrived without a legal representative.

The accused face charges including fraud, corruption, money laundering and racketeering.

They relate to a R340 million alleged irregular Durban Solid Waste tender awarded in 2017.

During the pre-trial hearings earlier this year, several accused informed the court that they had some financial challenges ahead of the start of the trial because the Asset Forfeiture Unit had frozen some of their assets.
