New MP can outperform us – Speaker

- BY MTHUNZI MAZIYA

MBABANE – Speaker in the House of Assembly Petros Mavimbela says with the right engagement skills, the new Member of Parliament (MP) from Siphofaneni can outperform everyone.

Interviewed yesterday, Mavimbela said the length of time in office did not matter. He said if the MP knew how to engage people, he or she could be even more effective than other MPs who had been in office for the full five years.

Engagement

“Politics are all about knowing what you want to do. If one has a clear plan, he or she can work like he has been there for the full-term. It’s all about art; the ability to engage people. The impact can be big for someone who has the right engagement skills,” he said.

Mavimbela said there was nothing wrong with the time remaining before the lapse of the current House’s

Aspiring MP term. He urged whoever would join the Legislature after this weekend’s elections to come in with a desire to work and achieve big things.

“If the new MP comes in for the sake of joining Parliament, then there is very little that he or she will be able to do. People are gifted at different levels. Others will have a good approach; others will not. Approach is

Commenting on the length of term likely to be served by the new MP, Mavimbela said he anticipated that Parliament would be dissolved around July next year, given that a new term for parliamentarians usually started in October.

“The Constitution states that within 60 days of the dissolution of Parliament,

there has to be a new House in place. In essence, this means in the first two weeks of October, the term for the new House has to begin,” he said.

As per the Speaker’s assertion, the new Siphofaneni MP will be in office, possibly for 12 months exactly.

It could be the shortest term in history, yet the people of Siphofaneni will be looking at deliverables ahead of a fresh vote next year.

Candidates

The seven candidates for the Siphofaneni race include Nomalungelo LaZwide Simelane (KaMkhweli), Moshoeshoe Nkambule (Madlenya), Khetsile Sikhondze (Maphilingo), Hlobsile Tfwala (Mphumakudze), and Thokozani Nkambule (Nceka). Others are Sabelo Percy Ngcamphalala (Ngevini) and Mzamo Ndwandwe (Tambuti).

The Speaker wished the aspiring and subsequent new MP the best of luck. He said the House was ready to welcome the winner and lead him or her in oath.
