VAT, income tax order to be amended

ZULWINI - Government of Eswatini was in the process of facilitati­ng amendments that would improve the tax legislatio­n environmen­t in the country.

Many businesses had in the past years faced liTuidatio­n and foreclo sure due to debts and tax penalties.

Minister of )inance 1eal 5iMNenberg said as government they were commit ted to creating conducive environmen­t for doing business in the country.

7he minister was speaNing during %usiness (swatini 7ax ,ndaba which was hosted at 5oyal 9illas yesterday where he was invited as a Neynote speaNer.

7he indaba was aimed at addressing tax related issues affecting businesses locally and abroad as well as educat ing the business more on tax.

5iMNenberg said they were in the process of facilitati­ng amendments that would improve the tax legislatio­n environmen­t and maNe local laws re sponsive to their harsh realities while ensuring sustainabi­lity of the fiscus.

He said specific examples were the Amendment of the 9A7 Act and the proposed amendments to the ,ncome 7ax 2rder.

“2ther legislatio­ns were also to follow to ensure that our legislatio­ns were relevant and support economic growth as well as the welfwere of ema6wati ´ he said.

7he minister added that taxes and their ability to move goods with ease were important elements of a condu cive business environmen­t.

He alluded that Ney indicators that they had used in the past to tracN progress and internatio­nal competi tiveness in these wereas had been the 3aying 7axes and 7rading Across %or ders indices of the now discontinu­ed (ase of 'oing %usiness ,ndicator by the :orld %anN.

He mentioned that they had contin ued to prioritise improvemen­ts in the tax and trade environmen­ts despite the absence of the ease of doing business indicator.

Environmen­t

(56 they had introduced several initiative­s to support government¶s intention to simplify compliance.

He mentioned that this was by way of various action programmes that entail the digitalisa­tion programme the debt relief programme and the transforma­tion of (56 into a ser vice oriented organisati­on.

5iMNenberg added that the signifi cance of the business environmen­t had not escaped the watchful attention of government.

“Along these efforts of improving the aforementi­oned aspects of the business environmen­t as a country we were improving tax policy design and tax compliance by maNing it easier for taxpayers to comply while deterring those that deliberate­ly refuse to comply ´ he said.
