JSC looks to fill judge’s position

MBABANE – The JSC is looking for a candidate to fill the position of a judge of the Supreme Court.
A vacancy was advertised in the media by the -udicial Service Commission (-SC) and the closing date for submitting applications was yesterday.
The applications, according to the vacancy advertisement, were to be submitted to the secretary of the -SC and they were to be ac companied by the candidate¶s curriculum vitae (CV) and copies of the required qualification.
Candidates who do not have the required qualification were advised not to apply as their applications would not be considered.
The responsibilities of the successful can didate, according to the advertisement, are to preside over court proceedings and perform any other duties assigned by the chief justice.
Section 154 of the Constitution provides that: (1) A person shall not be appointed as a justice of a superior court unless that person is a person of high moral character and integrity and in the case of an appointment to (a) the Supreme Court, (i) that person is or has been a legal practitioner, barrister or advocate of not less than fifteen years practice in Swa]iland ((swatini) or any part of the Commonwealth or the Republic of Ireland; or, (ii) that person is, or has served as, a -udge of the +igh Court of Swa]iland or -udge of a superior court of unlimited jurisdiction in civil and criminal matters in any part of the Common wealth or the Republic of Ireland for a period of not less than seven years ; or, (iii)that person is, or has served as, such legal practitioner, barrister or advocate as mentioned in paragraph (a) (i), and as such -udge as mentioned in paragraph (a) (ii) for a combined period of that practice and service of not less than fifteen years;
-udges of the Supreme Court are Chief -ustice %heki Maphalala, -udge Stanley Maphalala, -udge Phesheya 'lamini, -udge Majahenkhaba 'lamini, -udge -acobus An nandale, -udge 1kululeko +lophe, -udge Sabelo Matsebula.
-udge Robert Cloete was reported to have retired on medical grounds but during the course of this week, he was seen in court hear ing matters with other members of the bench.
