NYAKATFO – Thugs had a field day at the home of a popular businessman known as Makhelwane.

They continued raiding his home for about three days since Friday in search of cash as well as some e[pensive items, such as television sets. Makhelwane, who is of Asian descent, said the robbers initially arrived on Friday for their first attempt at breaking into his house.

+e said they then arrived the following day and that they failed to break in because of several dogs that he had as his pets and also for security. +e said the men then allegedly fed the dogs food laced with poison.

Poison

The dogs are said to have died within a few minutes of eating the poisoned food.

+e also revealed that when the attack happened, the police were called but they had not arrived as it did not appear safe. +e said there were about si[ armed thieves who broke into the house.

Makhelwane said the police advised him to go and spend the night elsewhere, because it was not safe at his home. +e said he had no option but to leave the house for the thieves to continue with their work.

+e said the thieves proceeded to poison his dogs and then en tered the homestead. They forced through the door and also broke the windows.

It appeared the thieves were looking for money, according to Makhelwane. +e said this was because they did not steal anything other than two TVs but they left signs that they were looking for cash.

Makhelwane said the thugs tore clothes and sofas in search of cash. Furthermore, he said they also ripped open cupboards as well as other closed spaces.

'r Mngcayi Kunene, a well known %uhleni traditional healer, said he also went to visit Makhel wane after hearing of his ordeal.

Traumatised

+e said it was very sad because Makhelwane was very good to the community and helped many people.

³I don¶t understand how a bad thing like this can happen to him,´ he said.

Meanwhile, Makhelwane said he was left traumatised when he discovered that the men poisoned five of his dogs.

³I raised those dogs like my own children,´ he said.

Makhelwane said the thieves may have used a pesticide to kill his dogs.
