MBABANE- A resident of Bhekinkhosi almost killed another over alcohol at a drinking spot situated in the area.

Nhlanhla Ngwenya hit Phumlani Dlamini with a brick in the face, causing him near fatal injuries. Ngwenya was subsequently arrested and charged with attempted murder. He pleaded guilty when the charge was read to him.

Testifying against Ngwenya, Dlamini told the court that he was called by one of his brothers, Bonginkhosi, to fetch him at a Ngozo homestead situated in the area. He told the court that upon arrival at the Ngozo homestead, one of his brothers, Edger, had a confrontation with Ngwenya over some beer bottles.

Dlamini submitted that upon learning about the argument, he rushed to separate the duo. He told the court that he thought it was over, little did he know that he would be the next target.

He submitted that Ngwenya assaulted him with a brick in the face after he had shortly left with Edger. It was Dlamini’s evidence that he was rushed to the Raleigh Fitkin Memorial (RFM) Hospital before he was transferred to the Mbabane Government Hospital.

Ngwenya had no questions during his cross-examination. However, in his defence, he started by admitting having assaulted Dlamini with the brick in the face.

He told the court that he failed to reason with Dlamini after he had confiscated all the beer bottles after intervening in their misunderstanding eith Edger.

He told the court that he was drunk when committing the offence.

“Dlamini came to separate us during the confrontation. He then left with all the alcohol, resulting in the commission of the offence. I failed to reason because I was drunk,” he submitted.

He told the court that he was in good talking terms with Dlamini after they had forgiven each other. Ngwenya told the court that he intended to call two witnesses to testify on his behalf.

The witnesses appeared on the list of Crown witnesses, who were expected to be paraded to testify against Ngwenya.

The Crown however, did not have any objection to the calling of the witnesses by Ngwenya since none of them had testified in the matter.

The matter was adjourned until November 14, 2022 for continuation.
