MBABANE - The Ministry of Health and government have investigated the cause of the frequent stockout of medicines in the public health facilities.

The commission’s report highlighted a number of gaps as well as specific recommendations. Some of the causes are as follows:

Inaccurate forecasting of commodities leading to over or under supply

Shrinking supplier base due to a number of reasons including payment tendencies (Dollar vs Lilangeni) Unfavourable economies of scale. Our quantities of commodities are very small compared to other countries. As a result manufacturers have to wait for other countries to place orders so as to form reasonable batches. On our own we are unable to form a complete batch for production, hence some delays may happen.

Communication between the Central Medication Stores (CMS) and facilities is a contributing factor.

Inconsistent supply of fuel has been a major challenge contributing to shortages of medicines in health facilities. An attempt to have fuel browsers at CMS has not been successful.

There have been a few reports of theft of medicines and other supplies and as such the perpetrators have been nabbed (through cameras fitted in the CMS as well as distribution vehicles) and their cases are still pending in the courts.

What is not known yet is how stock theft occurs in hospitals and clinics. There are controls in place but not necessarily strong enough across all facilities.
