Lution’s ‘Masonga’ debuts on Top 20 charts

MBABANE - Swati culture meets popular culture.

For many who are familiar with the kubutseka custom, the words,

Cili Masonga, kudla kwendlala are synonymous with and remain a preserve of the regiments and their sacred places of gathering known as emalawini, but not for Lution.

Considered by many as one of the Kingdom’s prolific lyricists, Lution, born Mzwandile Nxumalo, has found a way of weaving the sacred sayings of the Inyatsi Regiment with popular cultural beats to produce a new song aptly titled

‘Masonga’.

Custom

The song, which features Young Zesh of ‘KaKhoza’ fame, and Prof, is sacred in the sense that it is taken from the Swati cultural custom and samples the Inyatsi Regiment code. It plays a snap shot role of representi­ng the role of the process of joining the regiments known as kubutseka. When reached for comment concerning the process of making the song, he said: “I am humbled and honoured to be trusted with my art to deliver such an important song to our popular culture as well as ethnic culture through music.”

The Autonomy’ explores themes of history, love, gender issues and self-developmen­t over 15 tracks including Connect The Thoughts with Sarnilo, Plus Signs, which features Ayzee, L-Tore and Qibho Intalektua­l, Amazing Grace where he worked with Laro Tha Bambino, and American MC Konshens Tha MC who recently visited the country courtesy of the American Embassy. Age of the Acquarius is another standout and has the longest lists of features namely; Senetisiwe, Louis Lane, Jael LaPour, DEO GRATIAS, Dzeli the poet Velemseni, Nolo DEE and Lution’s biological mother.

‘Masonga’, which comes in as a four track, off the album debuted on the Eswatini Top 20 Chart Show on EBIS 2 FM last week charting at number 18 as one of the new six entries. Opening the show was another Hip Hop heavy weight A-Reece with a new banger titled ‘Intentions’, which features compatriot Marcus Harvey at number 20, followed by MacG of Podcast and Chill fame, who has a new Amapiano single titled ‘Nkantini’, featuring Sir Trill at number 19.

Collaborat­ion

The other three new entries were Inside, by Swati-born SA-based Jazz RnB wonderkid Manana at number 17, Rihanna who returns with a new single after a six-year hiatus titled Lift Me Up (Wakanda Forever 2 soundtrack), and Lemons (Lemonade) at number 16, a huge collaborat­ion from two of SAs biggest rappers AKA and Nasty C.

Lyrikal Busta’s newest single ‘Bantfwabam­i’ of his upcoming project AfroBliss, drawing the spotlight as the highest mover on the charts, jumping 14 places up the charts from 17 place to number 3, while K.O retained top honours at the number one spot, marking its ninth week on the local charts. The show airs every Friday at 8pm on EBIS 2 FM and is presented by the duo of Bongani ‘Bobo’ Dlamini and Bongani DJ Tizalami Dube.
