Xi addresses CIIE

BEIJING – Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday addressed the opening ceremony of the fifth China Internatio­nal Import Expo (CIIE), calling on all countries to work together toward a bright future of openness and prosperity.

“We should commit ourselves to openness to meet developmen­t challenges, foster synergy for cooperatio­n, build the momentum of innovation, and deliver benefits to all,” Xi said via video, noting that the world today is confronted with accelerate­d changes unseen in a century as well as a sluggish economic recovery.

“China is ready to work with all countries to practice true multilater­alism, build more consensus for openness, jointly overcome the difficulti­es and challenges confrontin­g global economic growth, and make sure that our commitment to openness will bring about broad prospects for global developmen­t,” said Xi.

Baby dumped in river

DURBAN – The body of a fourmonth-old baby was found dumped in a river in Isithebe, northern KwaZulu-Natal, on Saturday morning. According to IPSS medical rescue, paramedics responded to reports of a body floating in a river. “Sadly, on arrival of paramedics, it was discovered the body was that of a four-month-old baby. According to reports from the scene, the baby went missing the previous evening during load-shedding and despite family and community searching throughout the night, the baby was not found.”

3 drown on same day

DURBAN – Three people, including two children, have drowned in two incidents in Nongoma, northern KwaZulu-Natal. According to co-operative governance and traditiona­l affairs MEC Sihle Zikalala, in one incident children aged 11 and 12 from Bombolo Primary School were swimming in the Msunduzi River on Tuesday. In another incident on the same day in Nongoma, a 21-year-old male drowned while trying to cross a river in Emona.

Rapist gets life

NORTH WEST – A 47-year-old man from Mogwase in the North West was on Friday sentenced to life imprisonme­nt for raping a 27-yearold woman on April 25. Oupa Herman Mabalane was arrested the next day at Ga-Phiri village after the rape was reported to the police. Mabalane’s bail applicatio­n was rejected, and he pleaded guilty to two counts of rape, National Prosecutin­g Authority Spokespers­on Henry Mamothame said.

38 injured in accident

JOHANNESBU­RG – Thirty-eight people, including children, were injured after the bus they were travelling in overturned on the N1 in Rawsonvill­e. When ER24 paramedics arrived at the scene they found the bus lying on its side partially in the yellow lane. A triage area was set up while medics tended to the patients. On closer inspection, 30 patients had injuries ranging from minor to moderate, while eight were seriously hurt.
