You’re too noisy, fans told
QATAR - Fans in attendance at the World Cup have been told off by Qatar police for chanting too loudly, according to reports.
Authorities intervened when a local complained about the noise coming from a group of South American supporters on the Metro. The Express reported that the supporters obliged but were visibly unhappy with the request to tone it down.
Some of the fans were said to be from Ecuador, who beat Qatar 2-0 in the opening game of the tournament. There was reportedly also Argentina supporters on board, with their campaign starting with a shock 2-1 defeat to Saudi Arabia.
Once the police had left the carriage, they were in, it’s claimed the group stared straight at the individual who’d informed on them.
Incidents
It’s the latest of a number of incidents with the Qatari authorities. Last week, a Danish TV crew were approached while they were live on air by security staff who threatened to break their camera.
They were issued with an apology from Qatar’s Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy, who said the journalists were ‘mistakenly interrupted’.
Then over the weekend, Argentinian reporter Dominique Metzger was left bemused after police asked her what punishment she wants for a pickpocket who had robbed her while she was on channel TN.
“The policewoman said to me: ‘We have high-tech cameras everywhere and we are going to locate him (the thief) with face detection’,” Metzger explained.
“‘What do you want the justice system to do when we find him?’ What sentence do you want us to give him? Do you want him to be sentenced to five years in prison? Do you want him to be deported?’”
There’s also been incidents involving fans wearing LGBTQI+ symbols. Wales fans attending their opener against the USA were refused entry for wearing rainbow bucket hats.
