they were left traumatised by the incident.

They stated that the way the incident happened, it was too quick such that they did not get to clearly see the suspects. However, some of the students highlighted that they recognised some of the group members to be students.

Following the incident, the students said they were more worried about the state of security in the institution more than the food they lost on the day.

Defuse

They said at the time the incident happened, there was a huge commotion at the cafeteria but none of the security personnel came to defuse the situation.

The students said the institution was no longer safe and they had been communicating this issue for quite some time with management, but nothing had changed.

In May this year, three students were allegedly raped in the institution in one night. Some of the factors that were cited to have made the institution prone to crime was the poor maintenance of the buildings, which included poorly secured doors, broken light bulbs and poor fencing.

The shortage of security was also cited because this was around the same time the then security company’s contract was not renewed.

UNESWA Acting Registrar Richard Masuku confirmed the incident. He stated, however, that he did not get all the details on the incident as he was awaiting a formal report from the chief security officer.

“We have not identified them (the suspects),” he said.

Masuku said they were yet to confirm if the people who terrorised staff and stole students’ food were students or members of the public.

He said more information would be available after the chief security officer’s report.
